Magis: Be More, Be the Change

Just as change is one thing constant in our lives, change is one pattern that permeated MMTMC’s meeting of August 8, 2011 at Sangkalan Resto in Quezon Avenue, Quezon City.  With the theme - “Change is Always A New Beginning”, the officers for the 33rd year of MMTMC were inducted.

Guests for the very lively and interesting evening were led by Remy Cua (ACB, CL), Division A Governor, Mikel Roteche (CC, ALB), Immediate Past Area 2 Governor and Third Catayoc (ACB, ALB), President of Cananava Branch Toastmasters Club and first runner-up in the 2011 District 75 Humorous Speech Contest.

Mica Carino, (ACB, CL) is the new President of MMTMC with her equally active entourage of officers led by:

Vice President of Education and Training -  Ludy Bonzon, TM

Vice President for Membership                  -  Maggie Uy, CC, CL

Vice President for Public Relations             -  Luz Go, ACB, CL

            Secretary                                                     -  Margrethe Concepcion, TM

            Treasurer                                                     -  Roland Fernandez, TM

Sergeant-at-Arms                                        -  Jean Paul Datuin, CC

The new officers will be guided by Lynne Gamboa (DTM),  now immediate past president of MMTMC.  It is noteworthy that under the leadership of Lynne, MMTMC again garnered the Hall of Fame Award for receiving the President’s Distinguished Club Award for more than 5 years.  The President’s Distinguished Club Award is the award given to clubs in recognition of its excellence in attracting new members and producing toastmasters that achieved higher norms.

Tootz de la Torre (ACS, CL), incumbent Area 2 Governor charged the new officers into their roles and clearly identifying their areas of responsibilities.

This was followed by installation of the officers by present Division A Governor Remy Cua.

In her inagural address, Mica said her leadership would be defined by the simple word – “MAGIS” which is from latin and means “be more”, which she  hopes her officers and members of MMTMC would   follow the paths outlined by the acronyms of the word “more” as shown:

M  -

Make your own story; As a toastmaster, speech projects inspire members to make their own story, to extend their limits and to be MORE of themselves.

O -

Open your eyes; A world of opportunities opens up to the officers and to members by interactions with different clubs and the challenges offered by their roles and assignments leading them to new boundaries.

R  -

Relish the moment; Live in the present, live for the moment.

E  -

Enjoy;  Enjoy the company of fellow toastmasters, enjoy the challenges of facing your fear of public speaking, enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

Text Box: MMTMC is grateful to its guests especially to Remy, who installed its officers, Mikel, who evaluated Michael Reyes, a new member of MMTMC,  for his Ice Breaker speech and to Third who serve General Evaluation and who was very meticulous and categorical in his evaluations.

A star fell in the midst of MMTMC with the addition of new member – Jenny Rendaje, who participated in the   meeting.

MMTMC welcomes back Sipen Mines, Past President of MMTMC, who returned from Germany.

With its new Officers installed and a vibrant exchange of speeches and evaluations made for the evening , MMTMC meets the future with hope and confidence that it has transcended the challenge of change and opportunities,  and thus, kicking off the start of untold possibilities for the term 2011-2012. Go Metro Go!

A Multi-celebration Calls for a Toast

There were a lot to celebrate last May 9:  Mother’s Day, Donnovan’s birthday and the recent victory of Pacquiao. Nice cake.

First off, Noel gave another new twist to the “Anything Goes” portion. Everyone enjoyed the said game as it was both fun and mind-boggling… and of course, everyone was vying for the sparkling wine.

Nobody won (because of conniving Noel ) so everyone had the chance to savor the prize! Ed Gamboa also treated everyone with popsicles.

There’s also a new breed in town as MMTMC imported a Toastmaster all the way from Canada by the name of Margarethe Concepcion.

And finally, JP got his “Competent Leadership” award.  MMTMC truly values his commitment to the club.

MMTMC Soar High to the Next Level

Last April 29 to May 1, the Toastmasters International District 75 Convention was all about the celebration of the best speakers in the country as these “Kings and Queens of Speech” showed their dexterity to mark the 30th year of cultivating excellence of Toastmasters.  The said convention was held in Lo-ok function hall of Manila Ocean Park. However, the event is not just a celebration of the best speakers but also a celebration of Filipino diction as world-class.

The outset of the said event was marked by the event’s keynote speaker Francis Kong as he inspired Toastmasters from all over the Philippines with his early beginnings in realty and radio broadcasting. His speech’s turning point was all about communication as vital key in sharing one’s blessings.

The next pivotal episode was the educational session of International President-elect Michael Notaro, DTM as he unveiled the coming-of-age rebranding of Toastmasters International. The aforementioned rebranding  is for the purpose of consistent perception and recognition among members and prospective members.

Day 2 was also another noteworthy experience as Division A’s flair represent both Humorous and International Speech Contest. This is where Third Catayoc, ACB-ALB and Mariecel Onate, ACS-CL come in.

Congratulations to Third and Mariecel for winning 2nd-runner up!! Div A always places… that’s for sure!

Another educational session was done by BBC World News Anchor Rico Hizon.

Tootz dela Torre and Rico Hizon

Rico interviewed Tootz dela Torre, AL-DTM, what makes Filipino English diction world-class. “There are many regions in the Philippines with their distinct accents:  Bisaya, Kapampangan, Bicolano, Ilokano and the likes. Yet when we speak English, we enunciate English words properly. We put the right accent at the right SI-LA-BUL”, Tootz jokingly said.

Finally, Toastmasters danced the night away at the convention’s Governor’s Ball. Past Area Governor, Joy Gatdula  won “Best in Attire” with her pomelo-pink Maria Clara dress. Ernest Bautista, CC-CL, gave a very compelling song number as he tried his heart out to rap the whole song, “Billionaire”. Tootz also gave a riveting performance as part of the cotillion. Talk about multi-talented Metronians!

See you on next DISCON!

MMTMC proudly presents GIRL POWER

Under the leadership of Toastmaster Ana Agabin, MMTMC holds a meeting celebrating the unprecedented revolution of women’s liberation – girl power!

The meeting was graced with all of the women of the club in vogue – all dressed up in fab battlegear wooing all the males in attendance who could only admire the beautiful scenery. (For viewing purposes only  – touching isn’t allowed!)

The general evaluator for the night  is a self-exclaimed follower of “girl power” (in the household) - Freddie dela Cruz, ACB-CL. The prepared speakers featured two exemplary ice-breaker speeches delivered by Toastmasters Thess Chua & Marlon Realo, a basic speech #6 by the veteran Noel Sorreda, ACG-CL and the first advanced speech project by Fiel Meria, CC-CL.

Befitting the theme for the night, MMTMC was honored to have been graced by two beautiful guests in Shiela Vibal , who does the environment good as an HR practitioner for a geothermal energy company & Lorraine Datuin, Jean Paul’s (younger) sister & a graduating Arts Management major at the College of St. Benilde. Will we see these two remarkable individuals as bona fide Toastmasters soon? MMTC would like to bet on GIRL POWER!
